One of the most respected artists of late 19th and early 20th century Japan, Imao Keinen was appointed an Imperial Household Artist in 1904, a select group who produced art for the Imperial Palace itself. His long career also included time as a professor at the Kyoto School of Painting and membership of the elite Japan Art Academy, and his paintings were exhibited internationally at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, the Paris Expo in 1900, and the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair (among others). A specialist in the kacho-e style (bird-and-flower painting), 'A Pair Of Peacocks In Spring' is probably his most famous work, capturing beautifully the iridescent colours of the peacocks' plumage against a blooming tree.
