'Emperor Jimmu and the Yata Crow' by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, 1880. From the series 'A Mirror Of Famous Generals Of Japan'. This image is also available on:
According to ancient Japanese historians, Emperor Jimmu was the first Emperor of Japan. The great-great-great-grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, he led his people eastwards, conquering the Yamato region (an area around what is now Osaka and Nara), founding the Yamato kingdom that would go on to unify all of Japan. Jimmu is now considered a purely mythical figure by historians, and his traditional accession date of 660BC is known to be well before Japanese people crossed over from the Korean peninsula, let alone the foundation of the Yamato kingdom around the 3rd century AD. However, after the Meiji restoration in the 1860s the legends of Emperor Jimmu formed an important part of the Imperial cult, as the Emperor's claim to divine legitimacy rested on his descent from Amaterau via Emperor Jimmu. February 11th, the date of Jimmu's accession, was made a national holiday in 1873, and Yoshitoshi no doubt had this in mind when he released this print in February 1880. Jimmu is shown here using the solar power of his divine ancestor to terrify the enemy clans who resisted his migration. The bird perched atop his bow is the Yatagerasu, the three-legged crow, a divine guide sent to lead Jimmu towards the land of Yamato.
