'Glittering Sea' is one of the best examples of the 'Shin-Hanga' movement (literally 'New Prints), the successor to and inheritor of the ukiyo-e tradition. By the 1920s even most older artists had grown up with a Japan open to the outside world, and had been trained in Western styles alongside traditional Japanese artistic standards. The result was a fascinating blend of old and new techniques, taking the compositional cues of the ukiyo-e style perfected by artists like Hokusai and adding a greater emphasis on realism through the use of perspective and subtle shading. Aiding in this was the continuing development of printing technology - although it looks more like a painting, 'Glittering Sea' was printed using woodblock  techniques considerably refined but not fundamentally different from those used to print 'The Great Wave' in the early 19th century. This was the last generation of traditional Japanese print art, before the publishing industry gave way fully to modern machinery.

Yoshida travelled extensively throughout America, Europe and China for inspiration, but 'Glittering Sea' depicts a scene closer to home: Seto Inland Sea, which separates his home island of Kyushu from Honshu and Shikoku. In it, he captures perfectly the soft evening light shimmering on the calm waters of the sheltered channel, and ships sailing serenely through it lit by the sunset.
