'Hatsuhana Meditating Under The Waterfall' by Utagawa Kuniyoshi. From the series 'Stories of Wise and Virtuous Women', published ca. 1841 - 1842. This image is also available on:
A scene based on a story by playwright Shiba Shiso. Hatsuhana's husband Iinuma Katsugoro falls ill and becomes lame, forcing him to abandon his oath to kill the man who murdered his brother, Sato Gosuke. However, Hatsuhana prays under the Tozonawa waterfall on Mount Hakone, and Katsugoro is miraculously healed. Although variously translated as 'meditation' or 'penance', Hatsuhana's act is actually an ancient purification ritual. Originating in Japan's native Shinto traditions, cold-water purification was absorbed into Japanese Buddhism and became a popular method of meditation.
