Wooden placemats 12 piece set: Scenes from Imao Keinen's Birds and Flowers Albums

Regular price $178.00

Tax included.

A selection of scenes from early 1890s albums by Imao Keinen in the kacho-e ('Birds And Flowers') genre.

One of the most respected artists of late 19th and early 20th century Japan, Imao Keinen was appointed an Imperial Household Artist in 1904, a select group who produced art for the Imperial Palace itself. His long career also included time as a professor at the Kyoto School of Painting and membership of the elite Japan Art Academy, and his paintings were exhibited internationally at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, the Paris Expo in 1900, and the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair (among others). A specialist in the kacho-e style (bird-and-flower painting), he released several albums of paintings depicting a wide array of Japanese birds alongside various flora. While working with modern techniques, Keinen was a traditionalist in his choice of subject matter, and the influence of the original Chinese bird-and-flower style on his work is evident. Originating in the 10th century, the bird-and-flower genre was associated with the Confucian ideal of the scholar-artist.
