An eagle circles over the snow-covered plain of Jumantsubo, just to the east of Edo (Tokyo). Jumantsubo was so called because it covered an area of a hundred thousand tsubo (roughly equivalent to 80 acres). Sandwiched between the Sumida and Arakawa rivers and the shore, the plain was mostly too marshy for building and frequently flooded in stormy weather, providing an ideal hunting ground for sea birds. In this scene Hiroshige shows the marshes blanketed in pristine snow, through the framing wings of an eagle searching for prey above the frozen landscape. Jumantsubo was an early target for land reclamation around the rapidly growing city of Tokyo, and today lies under the neighborhoods of Fukagawa and Koto.
