Minamoto no Yoshiie was an 11th century samurai whose bravery and leadership ability made him legendary among the emerging warrior class, and a paragon for future generations to emulate. During the 11th century the authority of the emperor was starting to break down as Japanese settlement extended north and east of the traditional Japanese heartland around Kyoto, resulting in warrior clans that were too far from imperial authority to control, squabbling amongst themselves for power. Much of Yoshiie's career was spent bringing order and justice to these lawless regions. This print shows Yoshiie, en route to a battle, detecting an enemy ambush by noticing a flock of geese rising from the field; he correctly deduced that they had been startled by men hiding in the long grass.
