'Mountain Climbers' by Katsushika Hokusai, ca. 1830. Part of an additional ten prints produced for the series 'Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji' after the success of the original run. This image is also available on:
Although Mount Fuji is the ostensible subject, in most scenes the focus is more on the surrounding landscapes and the lives of the people living in Mount Fuji's shadow. As such, it provides both a breath-taking portrayal of Japan's natural beauty, and an invaluable historical record of the lives of ordinary Japanese people in the early 19th century, before the country opened up fully to foreigners in 1854. In the late 19th century ukiyo-e would make its way to Europe, and heavily influence the Impressionist and post-Impressionist movements.
