The first twelve scenes from Katsushika Hokusai's famous 'Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji' series, ca. 1830.
The series 'Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji' was produced by Hokusai for Japan's traditional woodblock printing industry (ukiyo-e), designed to be mass-produced and popular across all social classes. The initial run was printed in monochrome-blue using Prussian Blue (the world's first ever artificial pigment), which in the early 1830s had just been imported from Europe and was sweeping the Japanese art world. The series proved instantly popular, and was quickly followed up with the more expensive multicolor editions, as well as an additional ten scenes. Later editions kept the distinctively rich Prussian Blue among the other colors, especially for the sky and sea.
Although Mount Fuji is the ostensible subject, in most scenes the focus is more on the surrounding landscapes and the lives of the people living in Mount Fuji's shadow. As such, it provides both a breath-taking portrayal of Japan's natural beauty, and an invaluable historical record of the lives of ordinary Japanese people in the early 19th century, before the country opened up fully to foreigners in 1854. In the late 19th century ukiyo-e would make its way to Europe, and heavily influence the Impressionist and post-Impressionist movements.
