This scene shows a teahouse on Araki Street in the Yotsuya neighborhood of Tokyo. In Koitsu's time it was thought that the name of the district came from the four teahouses - Umeya, Kiya (Kuboya), Chaya and Nunoya - although more recent research has proved the name was used long before the teahouses were established. In a teahouse - as opposed to ordinary tea rooms and coffee shops - drinks are served by geisha, who also provide conversation and music. Today they are only found in Kyoto, and are quite exclusive, member-only establishments.
