Mount Fuji was a perennially popular subject in Ukiyo-e prints, and Hiroshige produced this series in homage to (or competition with) Hokusai, the previous generation's undisputed master of Ukiyo-e art. This scene captures Mount Fuji in the background, but the main focus of the picture is the roiling sea of Suruga Bay, smashing against the cliffs of Satta point. Undoubtedly one of Hiroshige's most beautiful, and most striking works, it was also one of his last: in 1858 a cholera epidemic swept through Edo (Tokyo), taking the 62 year old Hiroshige with it. Popular but undervalued during his lifetime, Hiroshige has since been recognized as one of the great masters of Ukiyo-e art.
