One of the most respected artists of late 19th and early 20th century Japan, Imao Keinen was appointed an Imperial Household Artist in 1904, a select group who produced art for the Imperial Palace itself. His long career also included time as a professor at the Kyoto School of Painting and membership of the elite Japan Art Academy, and his paintings were exhibited internationally at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, the Paris Expo in 1900, and the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair (among others). A specialist in the kacho-e style (bird-and-flower painting), Keinen built his reputation on popular and widely accessible picture albums. During the Meiji Period upwardly-mobile Japanese people, conscious of the changing times and the importance of modern education, were starting to take an interest in both Japanese and foreign natural history. Bird-and-flower albums served as both art and educational material in the homes of Japan's nascent middle class, a showcase of various bird species, displayed in a style that had its origins in Tang dynasty Chinese art - like the Meiji Period as a whole, a fascinating blend of ancient and modern.
